McCarthy Building Companies Inc. will begin construction on a new $20 million five-level, 293,000-square-foot parking garage for the City of Chandler next month.
Upon completion in December 2019, the garage will include a minimum of 930 parking spaces, adding much needed parking options for those accessing City Hall as well as restaurants and other venues in bustling downtown Chandler. The structure will be located to the west of City Hall across Arizona Avenue on the northwest corner of Chicago and Oregon streets.
“This strategically placed parking garage will help with business traffic on weekdays and with those traveling to Chandler for entertainment on weeknights and weekends,” said Kim Moyers, Downtown Redevelopment Manager for the City of Chandler. “We look forward to adding this structure to our parking inventory as a much needed resource for downtown, and in particular, for accessing the future New Square development.”
“McCarthy and Dick & Fritsche Design Group are looking forward to teaming up on this design-build parking structure, which is being developed to allow for modification into retail use on the ground floor in the future,” said David Clarkson, Project Director for McCarthy Building Companies. “Additionally, McCarthy is utilizing our self-perform team for cast-in-place concrete work, which provides a cost savings to the City on this project.”
Oregon Street will be realigned as needed to the north and south to accommodate the required size of the parking structure and meet City requirements. Chicago Street will also undergo improvements. The project will also provide an enhanced pedestrian connection between downtown Chandler and the New Square development to the east of the parking structure with the potential for a future bridge connection from one of the parking decks across Oregon Street to the New Square development. Façade treatments will be consistent with the area’s architecture and follow City-directed concepts.
Construction of the garage and adjacent New Square development will take away surface parking that had been available on these parcels. Downtown Chandler patrons and visitors are encouraged to use the four free parking garages located downtown, including the new Overstreet parking garage at Buffalo and Oregon streets and the parking garage south of Chandler City Hall. A free shuttle service that takes people from the garages to downtown establishments also is available from 5-9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
