McCarthy Building Companies Completes Major Construction Milestone at HonorHealth Sonoran Medical Ce

McCarthy Building Companies recently completed topping out at the new HonorHealth Sonoran Medical Center, the local healthcare system’s sixth Valley hospital located at Interstate 17 and Dove Valley Road in north Phoenix.

Once complete, the three-story, 210,000-square-foot HonorHealth Sonoran Medical Center will feature an inpatient hospital offering 60 beds, with the ability to expand to nearly 80 beds, based on the needs of the community. The facility will also feature a new 24-hour emergency center for patients of all ages, minimally invasive orthopedic and spine services, a state-of-the-art surgical unit, and comprehensive obstetrical and gynecological care with labor delivery services and a Level II neonatal intensive care unit.

The existing Sonoran Health and Emergency Center, which serves 17,000 patients annually, will remain an outpatient center that includes a Breast Health Center, medical imaging services and space for future expansion. In addition, a new Ambulatory Building on the campus will offer cost-effective, same-day surgical services and will house obstetric, pediatric, orthopedic and general surgery physician offices.

Slated to open in September 2020, the HonorHealth Sonoran Medical Center represents an investment of $170 million in the community. Devenney Group is the architect on the project and CBRE is construction manager. “It is exciting to reach this milestone in construction,” said Carol Lynn, senior planner/ designer for Devenney Group. “This brings us one step closer to realizing the years of careful planning that went into creating a facility that focuses on patient wellness and exceptional care.”

The project’s design and construction team are building the project using an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) process, which increases the certainty of achieving the owner’s vision through an interactive problem-solving process, whereby challenges are addressed through cluster groups using lean construction tools in a setting known as “the big room.” More than a year of pre-construction planning went into the process.

“Achieving the topping out milestone at HonorHealth Sonoran Medical Center is worth celebrating as it marks significant progress on the project, thanks in large part to the intensive IPD collaboration with the owner, designer and construction team,” said Sean Slawson, project director with McCarthy Building Companies.

“The teamwork and collaboration exhibited by Devenney Group, LSW Engineers and McCarthy while co-locating during the design phase of this project helped us give our client budget and scope certainty, said Mike Piekarski, senior program manager with CBRE. “This will result in meeting milestones throughout the course of construction and the on-time activation of the new state of the art Sonoran Medical Center.”
