Canyon State Electric (CSE) is partnering with Phoenix Children’s to ensure that a local family facing medical challenges does not go without electricity. The collaboration was prompted by the urgent need to maintain uninterrupted power for a young boy who is currently undergoing dialysis treatments.
The boy was only two years old when he began experiencing fatigue, nausea, and swelling. Phoenix Children’s diagnosed him with kidney failure and began dialysis treatments. With frequent trips to the hospital and other children to care for, the family’s mother must stay home full-time while they rely on her husband’s income.
“It just felt like we were having more and more problems. Then they threatened to turn our power off,” she said.
After discovering their issues with the power company, Phoenix Children’s jumped into action to provide a solution for the family.
“The Dialysis Center at Phoenix Children’s strives to support and encourage our families to be able to perform Peritoneal Dialysis at home when possible. This form of nightly dialysis is the preferred treatment type for patient quality of life and overall health outcomes in our pediatric patients,” said Jessica Price, LMSW, a social worker for Phoenix Children’s. “Maintaining electricity is crucial to be able to perform Peritoneal Dialysis and power the medical equipment needed to complete treatments.”
They connected with Canyon State Electric, experts in commercial and residential service. When Canyon State Electric learned about the critical situation, the company immediately took steps to prevent the utility provider from disconnecting the family’s electricity.
“We uncovered several issues with their panel breaking electrical code,” said Alejandra Valdiviez, assistant project manager at Canyon State Electric. “The entire main panel and connection to the utility line needed to be replaced and readjusted.”
“We’re committed to supporting our community,” said CSE President Robert Hughes. “No family should have to worry about losing access to essential utilities, especially when a child’s life depends on it. We are honored to partner with Phoenix Children’s to help ensure this family has one less thing to deal with during such a challenging time.”
Phoenix Children’s, one of the nation’s largest pediatric healthcare systems, plays a vital role in supporting families like this one in their times of need. Their social services team quickly identified the electricity issue as a potential threat to the child’s health and reached out to Canyon State Electric for assistance.
“Canyon State Electric was able to quickly solve this issue which has made world of difference in not disrupting the course of treatment as our patient makes advances toward receiving a kidney transplant,” said Price.
The family has expressed deep gratitude for the support they have received, though they wish to remain anonymous during this difficult time.
“I thank God that there’s one less thing we have to worry about,” the mother said.
